Comparing My Own "WORK" Twenty Years Apart

As I contemplate creating new choreographic work while I am in India, I decided to look back on some of my past creative work. I am reticent to describe myself as a choreographer when I think of the genius of works in which I was privileged to dance throughout my career. 

 This is also a chance for me to test out posting video content on this blog.

 These two solos were created twenty years apart. 

Shapeshifting was premiered in 1991 and was something of a “gift” to Matt who is speaking his own words in the video clip. Sadly, Matt passed away this year after living for decades with Multiple Sclerosis.

Brook was a section of my MFA thesis performance installation in 2011, and was created in memory of a close friend who committed suicide the previous year.

My first entry on this blog was June 30 th , 2018. Today I have decided this will be the last entry on this particular collection of reflections and remembrances. I started out wondering how, or if, my perceptions on anything might be different after six months on my own in India. After reading through all that I have written and documented, I don’t have any clear answer. But I would like to “wrap up” with some last thoughts and a “thank you” to everyone that has taken time to read even one post, much less the whole epic. Writing Challenges Me...

To organize my thoughts. To manage my time. To consider how I might be perceived. To be disciplined in my practice. But it also takes more time than I can afford, especially this week. On the point of writing, many years ago, I decided to create and write a short story as a gift for a friend. I had given myself a deadline to pass on the finished product as a Christmas gift, which meant I had about three months. I dedicated a minimum of an hour every day to writing, and once the writing was done, I moved on to editing, and then I moved on to illustrating, and then I moved on to crafting a one-of-a-kind-gift bound into a single book. In the end, the process ended up taking me almost eighteen months, the final product was gifted as a birthday present two years later than I had intended. On The Ground In India

Airports handle millions of travelers from all around the globe, and yet there is no universal “intuitive” design to manage crowds with radically different cultural backgrounds. So the approachability of airport staff to answer and direct “lost” travelers reflects greatly on the impressions visitors form as they enter a country through these ports. The three hour transfer in New Delhi to my Mumbai flight was very similar to my experience as an international in-transit transfer through Heathrow where you go through a very thorough security check point which took the better part of an hour. With the potential of appearing a lot more threatening than I think was intended, it was nice that the uniformed personnel interacting with passengers were not visibly armed, while armed soldiers watched from nearby. While English is an official language in India, there are likely hundreds of different languages that are used around the country, and I have almost no familiarity with any India
