HELLO!

This blog will hopefully be a place where curious friends and interested acquaintances might follow my adventures and reflections.
Since I may be posting about activities I am doing for various organizations, I respectfully state that my choices of content and opinions are my own, and do not necessarily reflect any directives by other people or organizations represented.

I have spent most of my life working as a professional in the Performing Arts as a dancer, teacher, coach, managing director, and choreographer (I use this last term lightly, as I have worked for people whose choreographic abilities and craft far exceeds anything to which I might aspire). Alongside of dance, I have enjoyed balancing my work inside studios and theaters with working in the Outdoor Sports industry as a kayaking guide, instructor, coach, operations manager, business owner, and recreational enthusiast. 

December 2018 will mark the tenth anniversary of my retirement from full-time professional performing as a dancer, and I will be in the middle of a six month Fulbright-Nehru Teaching and Professional Excellence grant project in India. This seemed like as good a starting point as any to create a blog to share, as I embark on a new adventure in my life story.

My first entry on this blog was June 30 th , 2018. Today I have decided this will be the last entry on this particular collection of reflections and remembrances. I started out wondering how, or if, my perceptions on anything might be different after six months on my own in India. After reading through all that I have written and documented, I don’t have any clear answer. But I would like to “wrap up” with some last thoughts and a “thank you” to everyone that has taken time to read even one post, much less the whole epic. Spending half an orbit of the earth around the sun on the opposite side of the globe from my “home” is a sobering reminder that “life goes on” no matter where I might be located. Living in the moment as best as I know how, has been my response to the deaths of friends and mentors. On The Ground In India

Airports handle millions of travelers from all around the globe, and yet there is no universal “intuitive” design to manage crowds with radically different cultural backgrounds. So the approachability of airport staff to answer and direct “lost” travelers reflects greatly on the impressions visitors form as they enter a country through these ports. The three hour transfer in New Delhi to my Mumbai flight was very similar to my experience as an international in-transit transfer through Heathrow where you go through a very thorough security check point which took the better part of an hour. With the potential of appearing a lot more threatening than I think was intended, it was nice that the uniformed personnel interacting with passengers were not visibly armed, while armed soldiers watched from nearby. While English is an official language in India, there are likely hundreds of different languages that are used around the country, and I have almost no familiarity with any India...

Filling the Available Time.

When my friend Jeff astutely noted that I might be “cognitively” exhausted from my sojourns here in India, I began to think about how I felt at the end of any time limited period of work. If there was a three week performance run, or a six week tour, or an eight week staging project, the last week always felt the hardest to me. It is as though my body and mind knew just how much energy and focus was required, given that I knew when the end was going to be. Saturday 26th January 2019 was a national holiday, Republic Day. I have often credited professionals in the performing industry with understanding deadlines. When the curtain goes up on a performance, there can be no more delays or excuses.
